Today we collected 91.6 pounds of kitchen scraps, a decent amount considering how many people are away at the moment! This week has been a busy week with the team processing and heat treating the compost ready for sale. Some of you have expressed an interest in our process, so here it is! Any missed plastic is removed from the finished piles, then the compost is roughly sieved and put in a giant tumbler with holes to give the worms a chance to escape. We then process 100lbs of compost at a time, by heating 3lb batches to over 180 degrees to sterilize it, setting it aside to cool. Once cooled we test each batch by planting radish seeds, if the seeds germinate quickly we have confidence in our finished product. We then bag and weigh and set aside ready for delivery. The process is quite time consuming but it is the best method we have found so far to be fully confident in our end product.
