It’s been a little while since our last update on March 2, and a lot has happened since then so stick with us for a long blog this week!
♻️ Recent Collections
Even with busy schedules and the tail end of winter, our amazing community has continued to show up:
-
March 6: 217.2 lbs
-
March 13: 131.2 lbs
-
March 20: 155.0 lbs
That’s over 500 lbs of kitchen scraps diverted from landfill in just three weeks — incredible!
🔥 Compost Update
Our active piles continue to tick along as temperatures slowly rise with the changing season. Spring is definitely starting to make its presence felt — both in the air and in the bins.
🌷 The Big Spring Goal: Finished Compost
As many of you know, we’ve been talking about preparing our finished compost for our annual spring giveaway — and now it’s time to really get going.
The compost is ready… but turning it into bagged, usable “black gold” is a bigger job than it might seem. Our current process is hands-on and time-intensive, involving sieving, transporting, heat-treating, cooling, and bagging in small batches. More about the process can be found here: Preparing Compost for Distribution
It takes time—but it ensures that what we give back to the community is high-quality, safe, and ready to nourish gardens across Greenwich.
With spring just around the corner, this is our next big push.
🌍 Why It Matters (Now More Than Ever)
In a world where the environmental impact of large-scale events can feel overwhelming, it’s easy to wonder whether small local efforts make a difference.
The reality is: they do!
Every pound of food waste we divert helps prevent methane emissions from landfill and contributes to building healthier soil—something known as a carbon sink, which helps store carbon rather than release it into the atmosphere.
To date, GCP has helped prevent an estimated 761,864 lbs of CO₂ equivalent emissions—a meaningful contribution made entirely through community action.
We may be small, but we are part of a much larger solution.
🌿 Inspired by What’s Possible
We continue to be inspired by the work of Waste Free Greenwich, whose recent visit to the CompostED facility in Valhalla highlights what composting can achieve at scale.
From aerated static pile systems to community compost give-back programs, it’s exciting to see how food scraps can be transformed into a true community resource.
Their message says it best:
Food scraps aren’t waste—they are the foundation of a healthier, more resilient ecosystem.
That’s exactly what we see happening right here in our own neighborhood.
💪 Time to Rally
As we head into spring, we’re entering one of the most exciting phases of the year—getting compost back into the soil where it belongs.
We’ll be focusing on:
-
Preparing finished compost for distribution
-
Improving efficiency in our process
-
Getting ready for our spring giveaway
💚 Thank You
We know this time of year can feel busy and transitional—but your continued support keeps this project moving forward.
Every scrap dropped off, every bucket emptied, every contribution matters.
And together, we’re turning small actions into lasting impact.
Happy composting — and stay tuned for giveaway updates! 🪱♻️🌱
