You may be wondering why today’s blog features a photo of the Fremont Troll from Seattle. Here’s why: we’ve now diverted over 13,000 pounds of kitchen scraps from landfill—and that’s roughly the same weight as the Troll! 🗿🌱
It’s an amazing milestone for our community, and it wouldn’t be possible without your ongoing support. Over the past two weeks, we collected a total of 329 pounds of food scraps—an incredible contribution to a greener Greenwich. Thank you for sticking with us and making composting a habit!
Turning Up the Heat 🔥
It’s been a busy time for our team on the ground. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the compost temperatures and giving the piles plenty of attention.
-
Monday: The pile hit a blazing 164°F—a bit too hot! That means the microbes were working overtime and starting to run out of oxygen.
-
We gave it a thorough turn, then checked again the next day.
-
Tuesday: Still steaming at 162°F, so more turning was needed!
-
Thursday: The temperature dropped to 148°F.
-
Today: Down to 142°F, still actively breaking down at a great pace.
The compost is decomposing fast, and we now have a large stockpile ready to be sieved and heat-treated.
A New Bin Begins 🔁
Today also marked the start of a new compost bin! Our previous bin kept dropping about a foot each week, which allowed us to keep topping it off. But this week, we had so much material that it was time to build a new pile.
In the photo below, you’ll see:

We’re excited to see how quickly this new pile fills up—especially at the rate things are going!
Thanks again to everyone for being part of this community effort. Here’s to more milestones, more microbes, and more magic in the compost!
Happy composting! 🪱🍌🌎🌿♻️
