Temperature Check and Update from GCP!

Published on 5 September 2025 at 16:55

This week, we collected 198 lbs of kitchen scraps—a fantastic amount to add to our ever-growing compost effort. Huge thank you to everyone who either dropped off or left out their food waste and kept the momentum going. It all adds up! 🍌πŸ₯šπŸ₯¬

Before we dive into this week’s compost stats, we have a small request that would make a big difference:
If you bag your scraps (which is totally fine!), please leave the bags untied. This helps us save time when sorting and keeps the system moving smoothly. Thank you for making it easier for our team to do the dirty work! πŸ™Œ

🌑️ Our "Compost Thermometer Tour"

This week we had fun taking the temperature of all four compost bins, each at a different stage of the breakdown process:

  • Bin 1: Finished Compost — 74°F
Cool, calm, and composted! This bin is fully broken down and ready for heat-treating before garden use. 🌱

  • Bin 2: Almost Finished — 77°F
The worms are still hard at work in this bin, even if things are cooling down. They’re doing some fine-tuning and final breakdown.

  • Bin 3: Active Breakdown — 116°F
This bin was filled a few weeks ago and it's in the hot zone of decomposition! The microbes are in full swing. πŸ”₯

  • Bin 4: Freshest Pile — 126°F
Just two weeks old and already heating up fast. This is where the breakdown party has officially started! πŸŽ‰

Isn’t it amazing how you can feel the life and energy of each pile just by checking the temperature?

πŸ‘₯ Teamwork Makes the Dirt Work

We also had a rare treat this week—our full composting team together in one place for the first time in a while! It was great to catch up, dig in, and share the satisfying whoosh of steam rising from the bins.

Thanks again to everyone for being part of this movement. Whether you're donating scraps, helping turn the piles, or just cheering us on from afar, you’re helping to make Greenwich a greener place—one peel, one turn, one degree at a time. πŸ’š

Happy composting! πŸƒβ™»οΈπŸŒŽ
