We’ve had a busy and productive two weeks here at the Greenwich Composting Project, and we’re excited to share our latest stats and observations!
🥕 Kitchen Scrap Collection Totals
-
Last week: With the full crew on duty, we collected 179.8 lbs of kitchen scraps.
-
This week: We edged up a bit more, reaching 181.9 lbs!
All of it has been added to our active pile, carefully mixed with plenty of carbon (thank you Chass household for all the shredding!) and aerated regularly to keep those microbes happy. Everything is looking great across the system!
🌡️ Compost Temperatures: Still Cooking!
We revisited our temperature logs this week, and the results are great:
-
Active Pile: Holding strong at 132.5°F—a great sign of active microbial breakdown. Each week, we’re seeing the pile shrink by over a foot as the organic matter rapidly decomposes.
-
Curing Pile: Sitting at a mellow 84°F, perfect for the final stages of breakdown.
-
Finished Pile: This one is now large and stable, matching ground temperature at 70°F, and ready for the next phase: heat treating!
- This shows how far we have come in 2 years, remember when we started and we struggled to get the piles to warm up and maintain active temperatures?
🪱 Worm Watch
We also did a quick check for invasive jumping worms. While we still plan to do a more detailed investigation, today’s glance showed no signs of any jumping worm activity—good news for now! Keeping an eye on soil health is just as important as monitoring temperatures and moisture.
Happy composting!
