๐Ÿฆƒ Thanksgiving Week Update: Compost, Gratitude & Big Milestones

It’s been a slightly shorter week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but that didn’t slow us down at the Greenwich Composting Project!

๐Ÿ“ฆ Collection Totals

  • Last week: 174.2 lbs

  • This (half) week: 154.2 lbs

Even with the holiday schedule, our community has kept the momentum going strong. Thank you to everyone who made the early drop-offs!

โ™ป๏ธ Nearly 16,000 Pounds Diverted!

Our running total since GCP began is now 15,886.7 lbs of food waste diverted from landfill—and counting!

We’ve also saved 13.23 cubic yards of landfill space. Need a visual? That’s about the same as:

  • ๐Ÿ˜ The weight of 1.3 adult African elephants

  • ๐ŸšŒ A full-size school bus

  • ๐Ÿš› Two commercial dumpsters worth of waste

That’s 16,000 lbs of scraps that didn’t rot in a landfill—thank you for helping us make that happen!

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Pile Temperatures Looking HOT (Literally)

All the recent aeration and carbon layering is paying off! Here’s the latest from our compost thermometers:

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Active pile: 150°F — firmly in the thermophilic range, where microbial magic happens.

  • ๐ŸŒฟ Almost-done pile: 92°F — cooling down but still actively decomposing.

  • ๐Ÿ› Curing pile: 78°F — transitioning into stable, finished compost.

Having three piles in three stages means we’re creating a continuous cycle of decomposition and renewal. If you are interested, here is a great blog on the process: https://helpmecompost.com/compost/basics/stages-of-composting/

๐Ÿชฑ Worm Watch: Thanksgiving Edition

Our worm population is thriving, especially in the maturing bins. You can actually see them in action in the photos below—turning your scraps into rich, dark soil. It’s kind of beautiful (in a wriggly way).

๐Ÿงก Giving Thanks

This Thanksgiving, we’re especially thankful for our incredible neighbors who choose to compost instead of send their food waste to landfill.

Your banana peels, pumpkins, eggshells, and coffee grounds are part of a much bigger story—one about climate action, community, and change. Together, we’re doing something real.

Thank you for showing up, turning scraps into soil, and helping Greenwich grow greener.

Happy composting—and happy Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐ŸŒฑ

The GCP Team
