🎃 Pumpkins, Progress & Pretty Scraps – Composting Update!

Published on 14 November 2025 at 16:20

The past two weeks at the Greenwich Composting Project have been amazing!

🌱 A Record-Breaking Fortnight
Today we collected a staggering 334.8 lbs of kitchen scraps—and yes, plenty of pumpkins! Last week’s total was 188.8 lbs, meaning we've diverted over 500 pounds of food waste from landfill in just two weeks. With scraps still trickling in as we write this, next week’s total may soar even higher!

📦 Landfill Space Saved at 13 Cubic Yards
Our all-time total waste diverted now stands at 15,558.3 lbs, and we’re just shy of hitting 13 full cubic yards saved (currently at 12.97). It’s incredible to think how much space and CO₂ we’ve saved together as a community.

🗑️ Pumpkins!
We’re loving how many neighbors are dropping off their decorative gourds—thank you! The chopping sessions have been… let’s just say therapeutic. Few things are more satisfying than slicing up pumpkins with a machete for a good cause. 🎃

♻️ Third Bin Rebooted
With the surge in volume, we’ve reactivated our third compost bin. All three bins are now in use! While our two original piles cooled down a bit in the colder weather, we added shredded newspaper for more carbon and gave them a hearty turning to boost aeration. They were getting compacted, so we’ll continue fluffing them this week. With hindsight we may have overfilled them - we will learn from this mistake!

📸 Yes, Compost Can Be Beautiful
We captured some stunning photos of this week’s kitchen scraps—old flowers, vibrant orange pumpkins, even some stylish coffee grounds. Who says composting isn’t photogenic? Sometimes the beauty starts before the black gold even forms!
