Early Morning Composting + ReThink Waste Fair Tomorrow

Published on 17 April 2026 at 08:03

Today we composted super early because the seniors have such a fun-packed day ahead. It was still dark when we set off, which made this morning’s composting feel especially memorable. They say the early bird catches the worm — but in our case, the early composters feed the worms!

Even before sunrise, the piles were already hard at work — steam was rising from all four piles, which was amazing to see. Earlier this week, we checked temperatures and found a lot of activity: one warm pile at 95°F, one active pile at 120°F, and two super-hot piles at 132°F and 145°F. These hotter temperatures are exciting because they show the compost is really working, but they also mean more turning and aerating to keep everything balanced and active.

A big thank you to everyone who left their bins out for us this morning — we really appreciate it, especially on such an early pickup day. And a huge thank you as well to those of you who dropped off scraps. We know that takes extra effort, and we are very grateful.

This week, we collected 132.6 lbs of scraps. We also dropped off the compost that had been ordered during pickup today. Thank you so much for supporting the project. Any funds raised go directly back into keeping the project running — including our composting containers, collection buckets, thermometer, website fees, and compost bags.

At the moment, we have 4 more heat-treated bags available, and our heat-treating process is continuing every day, so more bags should be ready soon.

Tomorrow, GCP will have a table at the 5th Annual ReThink Waste Fair, and we are so excited to be part of it. The fair is a family-friendly community event focused on reducing waste and helping people think more sustainably about the things they use and throw away. There will be activities, workshops, demonstrations, community groups, and lots of great ideas for reducing waste in everyday life.

If you are heading to the fair, please stop by our table and say hi — we would love to see you there.

A quick compost note:
Compost is not the same as potting soil. Potting soil is usually used to grow plants directly in containers, while compost is a soil amendment, meaning it is added to soil to improve it. Compost adds nutrients, helps soil hold moisture, and supports healthy plant growth.

How to use your compost:
Mix it into garden beds, flower beds, or around shrubs and vegetables. You can also blend a small amount into potting soil for containers, but compost is usually best used as an addition rather than used on its own. A little goes a long way.

Thank you, as always, for supporting the project and helping us turn food scraps into something useful for the community.
