Sorry for the long silence, but it has been a busy few weeks for GCP! Since our last blog, we have attended the ReThink Waste Fair, celebrated Earth Day with Parkway School, and played with worms at Live Like Luke — all with a bit of composting in between!
The ReThink Waste Fair was a really fun event with lots of inspiring stands and so many people working on creative ways to reduce waste. We were lucky to help Britta Calkosz, Waste Free Greenwich’s master composter, at her composting table and had a great time talking to visitors, many of whom already compost - it was fun to discuss all the different approaches! We were also honored to be included in the 2026 Sustainability Awards presented at the fair. Thank you so much to the Chass Family for nominating us — we really appreciate the support.
Next, we celebrated Earth Day by returning to Parkway Elementary School to give another presentation on composting. It is always fantastic interacting with the Parkway students, who are so interested, ask such thoughtful questions, and are genuinely excited to learn more. Parkway visits are definitely a highlight! Thank you to Asha Chattoraj for helping us at this event!
Then, last Saturday, we were at Live Like Luke, again helping at Britta’s table. One of the best parts was seeing what a huge hit Britta’s worms were with the kids — they were definitely a crowd favorite. Thank you to Addie Marder for braving what turned out to be a very chilly morning, helping us set up and monitor the table.
And, in between all of that, there has of course been plenty of composting. Last week we collected 192.4 lbs of scraps, and today we collected 160.9 lbs, meaning that over the last two weeks we have diverted a total of 353.3 lbs of food scraps from landfill.
On the composting side, we have not been able to give the piles quite as much attention as we would have liked recently, so they have cooled down a little. Today, though, we gave all three piles a thorough aeration after adding both greens and browns, so we are hopeful that they will start heating up again over the coming week.
We also received some really encouraging feedback recently. Someone who has been composting for years told us that, thanks to information on our website, they now add newspaper and cardboard to their compost, making their compost process much more efficient. It is such a great feeling to know that people are following the site and finding it helpful, and even more exciting to hear that even experienced composters are learning something new from it.
Thank you, as always, to everyone who supports the project, drops off scraps, visits us at events, and helps spread the word.
