It was another busy week for GCP, with 187.2 lbs of kitchen scraps diverted from landfill.
Our Champion Composters of the Week are the Towles, who contributed an incredible 65.4 lbs — thank you!
This was also Ryan and Seb’s first solo week running the composting process. Luckily, both are pretty strong, so the carrying, turning, and aerating did not cause them too much trouble. The smell, however, was another story! Summer composting is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but cooler temperatures are coming and pickup duty should soon become a little more pleasant.
Aiden had track, and Lucas chose Zzzz's over composting this week, but both are enthusiastic to join the team next time. Once everyone is together, we will update our Compost Crew photo to introduce the new team properly.
At the moment, we have two active composting units and one curing unit. The curing compost is not ready for solarization yet, but if everything continues as planned, it should be finished, solarized, and ready in plenty of time for our spring compost giveaway.
And finally, the numbers! GCP has now diverted an amazing 21,772.7 lbs of food scraps from landfill, saving an estimated 18.14 cubic yards of landfill space.
To put that into perspective, 18 cubic yards is almost enough material to fill an entire 20-cubic-yard construction dumpster. Seeing a dumpster that size really makes you realize just how much food waste our relatively small group of households has kept out of landfill.
New crew, new season, same mission — keep the scraps coming!
