This week, GCP collected another 165.2 lbs of kitchen scraps, bringing our grand total to 21,937.9 lbs diverted from landfill and 18.28 cubic yards of landfill space saved.
We also had almost the full new compost crew together! All three younger siblings of the original GCP team — Sebastien, Ryan and Aiden — were on duty. Seb did have to make an early escape for a piano lesson, which rather conveniently left Ryan and Aiden with the heavy aerating job.
Lucas was busy playing hockey this week, but hopefully next week we will finally have everyone together and can get that new Compost Crew photo.
The summer smell is, unfortunately, still very much with us. Opening the scraps is definitely the least glamorous part of the job, but once the carbon is mixed in and everything has been thoroughly turned and aerated, things improve considerably. Cooler weather cannot come soon enough!
Our temperature check showed that the piles are not quite where we want them yet, but after today's thorough aeration and a good mix of carbon and nitrogen, we are hopeful they will be heating up nicely again by next week.
165.2 lbs saved, plenty of muscles put to work, and another successful week for the new GCP crew!
