This week, we collected 141 lbs of kitchen scraps, plus another 81 lbs that were very kindly dropped off last week.
We were composting in the rain today, but thankfully it was nothing compared with last week’s torrential downpour!
Our active pile is now hot, steamy, and breaking down fast. Aiden was surprised to see just how much the level of the food scraps had dropped in only two weeks — a great reminder of how quickly an active compost pile can transform all that material.
We also welcomed a new helper, Nayan, to the team today. We love seeing interest in the project continue to grow, and we now have 5 regular composters helping keep GCP going.
If it works for everyone, Sunday will continue to be our regular pickup day going forward.
Thank you, as always, to everyone saving scraps, dropping them off, and supporting the project — rain or shine!

Welcome Nayan! I saw a post with funny comments about a certain rookie given a “1-game suspension” for sloppy pickup and a subtle Purple Rain reference. I was cheering at a hockey game but meant to reply and now I can’t find the post - maybe deleted but still works in the search. Anyhow I’m sorry that I couldn’t drop off after a busy week and that our giant pile of scraps resulted in a driveway spill and TYSM for making our ‘hood a better place.
