GCP has now hauled the equivalent of 4 adult elephants up the hill!

We have not done a blog update since 6/13, but there has been plenty happening behind the scenes at GCP.

Most excitingly, we have now diverted over 21,000 lbs of food scraps from landfill — a huge milestone and about the weight of 4 adult elephants!

We are also very pleased to report that our new solarization process is working extremely well. This has turned out to be a much better system than our old method of microwaving small batches. Not only is it far less labor-intensive, but it also uses natural solar energy rather than electricity, which feels like a much better fit for the project. We are consistently reaching temperatures above the recommended threshold, and have recorded temperatures as high as 150°F. We currently have 5 solarized bags available.

As part of refining our finished product, we have also identified that some of our compost is a little nitrogen-rich. Some of you may have noticed that this can make the finished compost smell a little stronger than usual. This is not a problem once the compost is mixed into soil, but we are keen to improve the balance and overall handling quality of the finished product. To address this, we have been mixing in pine shavings to help absorb excess moisture and rebalance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio.

GCP will now be taking a short break for a few weeks, but everything will return to normal on 7/24.

Thank you, as always, for supporting the project and helping us keep so many food scraps out of landfill.
